Halloween is a time where you can scream and act like crazy because the ghosts of Halloween are sure to get you. The term Halloween, and its older spelling Hallowe'en, is shortened from All-hallow-even, as it is the evening before "All Hallows Day". It is most popular in Ireland, where it originated, also known in Irish Gaelic as "O'che Samhain" or "Samhain Night".
Halloween's theme is spooky and scary things like death, magic, blood, mythical monsters and similar things. Commonly-associated Halloween characters include ghosts, ghouls, witches, bats, owls, crows, vultures, haunted houses, pumpkinmen, black cats, spiders, goblins, zombies, mummies, skeletons, werewolves, and demons, as well as certain fictional figures like Dracula and Frankenstein's monster. Black and orange were the traditional colors of Halloween but in modern Halloween, purple, green, and red are also prominent. Elements of the autumn season, such as pumpkins and scarecrows, are also reflected in symbols of Halloween. One of Halloween's most prominent symbols is 'The carved jack-o'-lantern', with a candle lit inside.
The main event of modern US-style Halloween is 'trick-or-treating', in which children dress up in costume disguises and go door-to-door in their neighborhood, ringing each doorbell and yelling "trick or treat!". The occupants of the house will then hand out small candies, miniature chocolate bars or other treats. Tricks play less of a role in modern Halloween, though Halloween night is often marked by vandalism such as soaping windows, egging houses or stringing toilet paper through trees. Casting flour into the faces of feared neighbors was also done once upon a time.
Typical Halloween costumes have traditionally been monsters such as vampires, ghosts, witches, and devils. If you are looking for a new way to experience Halloween, all you need is a love for Halloween and a desire for fun, and there will be many things you can contribute to a haunted house, hayride, walk-through, or any other type of haunted attraction. Why be the same old plain ghost? Some unique costume ideas that I can suggest are:
1) Frank Einstein: Get a Frankenstein mask and attach an Albert Einstein wig, spray the wig with green hair color and wear a lab coat with pocket protector, pens, etc.
2) The Ump: Wear an umpire outfit. Rip some holes in the clothes. Place fake scars, bruises and blood where skin is showing.
3) Static Cling: Wear any kind of mismatched clothes, pin one pant leg up, pin dryer sheets on you as well as socks, small towels, etc., and then use hair gel to make your hair look like it has static.
4) Catcher in the Rye: Find a set of (baseball) catcher's gear and wear it. Then take a clear garbage bag, and draw or glue labels on it to duplicate a bread bag from a loaf of rye bread. Cut holes for your legs, arms and face, and put it on over the catching equipment. Twist tie the bag on top.
5) Blood Sucking Attorney: Dress in business suit, and carry a brief case. Wear vampire makeup and fake vampire teeth. Pass out business cards that say "B. Sucking, Attorney-at-Law."
6) Pirate: Form a fake wooden leg by wrapping your bad one in brown felt. Wear sailor pants or jeans with a striped top. Tie a bandana around your head, wear an eye patch, carry an empty bottle marked XXX (for the "rum") and mutter "aargh" a lot. Ask for "Trick or treat, matey!"
7) Cereal Killer: Attach little cereal boxes to a shirt, cut a slit in the boxes, glue in plastic knives into the holes, drip red paint running down from the knife hole in the box.
There are also several games traditionally associated with Halloween parties. The most common is dooking or bobbing for apples, in which apples float in a tub or a large basin of water; the participants must use their teeth to remove an apple from the basin. A variant involves kneeling on a chair, holding a fork between the teeth and trying to drop the fork into an apple. Another common game involves hanging up treacle or syrup-coated scones by strings; these must be eaten without using hands while they remain attached to the string, an activity which inevitably leads to a very sticky face.
Halloween is one time of the year where almost anything goes, allowing people to live out fantasies, if only for this one night. The social freedom of Halloween gives people who are normally stressed out and/or emotionally restrained a chance to "let loose", get spooky, scary and naughty. It's simply an assumed persona for a night of celebration.
Halloween is a festival for boisterous merrymaking, partying till the wee hours of the night and being in high spirits! But the frenzied celebration, playing the trickster and having a fling are encouraged only as long as it stays within sensible and safe parameters. While going a little over-the-top in celebrating Halloween is of course granted, keeping a tab on the 'caution' button is just as much appreciated. And as you perhaps already know'it's always better to be safe than sorry!
